Chapter 13

Wade

Irushed through the automatic doors of the hospital, my heart pounding in my chest. The air in the hospital filled my chest with anxiety, making it hard for me to breathe. The antiseptic-smelling hospital corridor was like an additional punch in the gut. My nerves were eating away at me as I went into a state of panic. The drive to the hospital was a blur. I don’t even remember how I got from Wren’s apartment to the hospital without crashing. I navigated the sterile corridors in the hospital, searching for the room where they were pumping Flynn's stomach.

My mind was racing, replaying the phone call that I’d gotten. How could this happen? I knew it was bad, but I never thought she’d be reckless enough to do something like this. All the partying, the recreational drugs, why wasn’t I more cautious about this? I knew she was standing on the edge of a mental breakdown, yet I turned a blind eye to it. Why didn’t I fucking talk to her about it? Taken more action to prevent this from happening? Maybe then I wouldn’t have gotten a call that she’d overdosed.

I spotted the familiar sign with the white letters indicating the emergency room, yet I paused there. My feet wouldn’t move another step. I was no longer sure I had the strength to push the door open. What if I got there and Flyn was …

The doors to the emergency room suddenly swung open, revealing a scene that made my stomach churn. Medical professionals darted around, their faces etched with urgency and determination. My eyes scanned the room, desperately searching for a familiar face among the chaos. My feet carried me on their own inside the emergency room.

There, lying on a cold, unforgiving stretcher, was Flynn. Her skin was pale, her hair disheveled, and she seemed completely out of it. Tubes and wires snaked across her body, connecting her to machines that beeped rhythmically. I couldn’t tear my eyes away from her. She looked so vulnerable and fragile.

The doctors and nurses worked tirelessly, trying to undo the damage that had been inflicted upon her body. The sound of machines beeping and whirring continued like a haunting nightmare.

“Sir, will you give us room to work? We’ll be right with you.” A nurse pushed me out of the room before I could even put myself together to answer her. As soon as I was out of that noisy room, I could hear my own heartbeat drumming in my ears. The fear took over. Was Flynn going to die?

“Wade!” Tate yelled, and I turned around, seeing him arrive equally confused and panicked as I was.

“Flyn?” he asked.

“She’s still in there. The doctors are pumping her stomach.”

Tate ran his fingers through his hair. “How could she let it come to this? Why didn't she reach out to us?”

I looked at him; he was a mess as well. He’s run straight out of a shooting and barely had it together.

“Come on.” I pulled him to sit with me on the waiting chairs.
